The clans have rankings, as you've hopefully noticed and they go, from most powerful to least powerful, leader, deputy, medicine cat, warrior/elder/queen, apprentice, kit.
Leaders control the clan life and really make the decisions.
{All leader names end in 'star.'[tab]ex. of names: Firestar, Icestar, Drizzlestar, etc.}
Deputies are the leaders' left-hand man, their helper, the cat that carries out hunting voyages and patrols of the clan borders.
{ex. of names: Same as warrior/elder/queen names. See below.}
Medicine cats do the healing for the clan, giving various herbs to sick or injured cats to help them heal. These cats also have a special connection with a clan of cats that are deceased. This clan of the cats' "warrior ancestors" is refered to, by the clan cats, as Starclan.
{ex. of names: Same as warrior/elder/queen names. See below.}
Warriors, elders, and queens are practically on the same level of power in the clans. (Warriors are slightly more powerful than queens/elders, and queens are slightly more powerful than elders.)
{Two-part name, normally consisting of two nature-related words, but occasionally non-nature-related words.[tab]ex. of names: Featherstrike, Icewhistle, Sandstreak, etc. FYI, Ghostwhite is fine}
Warriors carry out the normal duties of any person in the real world. They hunt, they fight, they train the younger cats (called apprentices).
Elders are warriors that are either too old to carry out their duties or unable to fight and such. (In the books, there was a very young cat that needed to retire early after losing his eyesight.)
Queens are the cats that are expecting kits, or have kits of their own. They don't typically fight, but will if it becomes absolutely necessary.
Apprentices are the younger cats in the clans. They are more than six moons old (a moon = a month, or one cycle of the moon). They fetch moss for bedding, train to be warriors, and help out with a lot of the stuff warriors don't have time for. (clearing out rotting prey from the prey piles, removing ticks from the elders' fur).
{End in 'paw'. [tab]ex. of names: Wildpaw, Grasspaw, Heatherpaw, etc.}
Medicine Cat Apprentices learn about herbs and such, rather than the fighting that normal apprentices learn. While there are numerous apprentices, there is typically only one medicine cat apprentice at any given time.
{End in 'paw'. [tab]ex. of names: Wildpaw, Grasspaw, Heatherpaw, etc.}
Kits are the cats younger than six moons and have no job in particular except be... kits.
{End in 'kit'. [tab]ex. of names: Larchkit, Mosskit, Jaykit, Sparrowkit, etc.}
BTW: Ghostclan doesn't have typical warrior names, as they are comprised of non-clan cats. They can have names that are less related to stuff that feral cats would typically know.
Sorry about the long summary of the ranks. If there is any more information you need, feel free to either ask me, or my co-admin, Rin (aka Spellstar, RC leader).
